History of La Costa–Then and Now

Ad for La Costa 1967

The Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, CA had its glamorous beginnings in the 1960’s as Rancho La Costa, when Alga Road was a rutted dirt road and horse stables adjoined the golf course.  In those days, La Costa was a relaxing getaway for Hollywood entertainers and sports figures such as Frank Sinatra, Billy Daniels, Sandy Koufax, Robert Young and so many others.

When La Costa opened its doors in 1965, it was a ranch resort far ahead of its time. La Costa was the first to offer a full-fledged spa integrated with a championship golf course and a 90-room hotel.

The resort was initially developed by visionaries Merv Adelson and Irwin Molasky, who saw the potential of La Costa real estate development that included not only the resort, but of homes and neighborhoods surrounding it. The location was (and still is) absolutley exquisite.  La Costa lies just east of the protected Batiquitos Lagoon and is graced with rolling hills, wild canyons, and breathtaking views of both the ocean and mountains to the east.  And just as Adelson and Molasky envisioned, there are today lovely homes and neighborhoods surrounding this world-famous resort that attracts visitors from around the world.

La Costa Resort has undergone several makeovers in its near 50-year history–and today it is better than ever with not only championship golf and tennis, a world-class spa, fine dining–but the addition of the Chopra Center, which with Deepak Chopra attracts a global following.

I am fascinated with the history of La Costa and last year put together a montage slide show that mixes the old with the new:
