La Costa and Aviara on Fire

La Costa and Aviara FIre

La Costa and Aviara on fire? The La Costa and Aviara wildfires are now collectively known as the Poinsettia Fire, which is currently raging through the hillsides and canyons that line Aviara and Carlsbad. It also appears at least 30 homes may have been damaged or lost in the area.

La Costa real estate has largely been spared, so far.  However, the normally clear air is now thick with smoke and fine ash has started to fall–the kind of effluence that clogs pool filers and makes sludge when watered.

We just received automated call from City of Carlsbad warning that we may be advised to evacuate. We, in turn, are on social media offering refuge to clients and friends. Phone is ringing with calls from family and buddies offering shelter and prayers.

This is what happens during life’s calamities and when we come to re-admire the kindness of loved ones and strangers.

We now hear the fires, with separate names, have recently  erupted in San Marcos and El Cajon.  Add those to not only Carlsbad, but two fires in Camp Pendleton, one in Fallbrook, another in Scripps Ranch and 4-S Ranch, and God only knows where else.

Meanwhile the Encinitas YMCA has closed–when in all likelihood it might have been set up as a refuge site. Instead, La Costa Canyon High School is available as is a center in Calavera Hills.
And unlike the Witch Creek Fire in 2007, these days we have social media where we can all hear of fresh outbreaks of fires, those who are opening homes to those in need of shelter along with school and road closures.

So what will we see in the next few hours? Lake San Marcos has been evacuated and we are praying for the safety of friends in San Marcos. Actually, for all of San Diego. And on a personal level, know we will, at a minimum, have big clean-up in the morning.
